Jugglerz Sound from Stuttgart won the „Who Runs the Town“-Clash against Black Chiney (USA), Supersonic Sound (DE), Herbalize-It (NL) and Dancehall Soldiers (IT) at U-Club in Wuppertal, GER.
The event in the renowned U-Club was well attended. After a warm-up by Mattia of Warriorsound, also being the host for the night, the DJ-Battle started. The rules varied from the classic concept of a soundclash to add spice to the game: Two sounds play three times three to five tunes against each other. Then the crowd decides who won this “micro“-battle and the loser has to leave. The winner plays against the next contender. The sound that wins the most micro-battles wins the clash. It was allowed to play dubplates, 45s or remixes.
First match was Supersonic vs Herbalize-It. Both of them started their rounds very „clashy“ with war-speeches and a ot of dubplates. The rather agressive vibe may be due to the fact that both sounds will fight against each other in a classic soundclash in Vienna, Austria three weeks after the event. In the last mini-round Herbalize-It drew for songs like „Badda Dan Dem“ by Burro Banton and „Jump Around“ by House Of Pain which hyped up the crowd. Supersonic had to leave.
Then it was Black Chiney against Herbalize-It. Bobby chin played it really cool and professional: A very clean and deadly „speech, tune, forward, speech, tune, forward“-round for the war-heads as well as nice juggling segments gave them the victory over Herbalize-It who seemed to rush a little bit through their tunes.
The next battle was Black Chiney versus Jugglerz. Jugglerz started the round with a speech about only one somebody run this town followed by Capleton’s „Jah Jah City“ and Sizzla’s „Jah Jah run things a no you“. This showed their concept for the night: Juggling-rounds with a topic mixed with war-speeches and dubplates for the heads. In a fun battle DJ Meska and Shotta Paul counteracted Black Chiney’s regular „Bumaye“ with their „badder dubplate version“ of „Bumaye“ and won.
So the next match was Jugglerz versus Dancehall Soldiers from Rome. The Italians represented well but it was too hard for them to beat Jugglerz in U-Club, Germany.
The next round was Jugglerz versus Herbalize-It: Shotta Paul said he didnt trust Sultan because they knew each other for six years and Sultan always spoke English. It wasn’t until recently that Shotta Paul had found out Sultan spoke „better German than me“ – followed by Bounty Killer’s „Spy Fi Die“. Ninjaman’s „Border Clash“ also made sense and „Dance a yard before you dance abroad“ referring to Herbalize-It’s presence in Germany. Sultan counteracted with a speech about „Shotta Paul is a liar“, because they knew each other since 2004. Shotta Paul and DJ Meska answered with a dubplate selection on the „Answer“-Riddim with Bounty Killer, Romain Virgo, Jah Vinci and Beenie Man and won the round
Jugglerz vs Supersonic was up next: Dubs and Juggling tunes made the rounds but Jugglerz‘ „Jamaica“-round with Kartel’s „Jamaica“, Busy „Jamaica Love“ Jr Gong „Welcome to Jamrock“ and Chronixx „Smile Jamaica“ got the biggest forwards in this match.
Then Mattia from Warriorsound couldn’t hol back his temper and decided to enter the competition – also because Jugglerz already had won against all opponents and actually were already the winner of the night. He started with a speech about how Jugglerz always keep telling their story that they were the youngest sound and played a dubplate of Cham’s „Ghetto Story“ saying „We don’t want to hear your storyyyy“ and received a huge forward. Jugglerz came back in and said after playing for more than two hours in a row and clashing everybody they couldnt win against Mattia because he was the resident in U-Club and the don in the place. So they didn’t answer back all of his arguments what some hardcore Clashfans regretted. So in the second „micro“-round DJ Meska played a wicked Dubplate-Selection on the „Sick“-Riddim with Charly Black, Capleton and Ninjaman and got back the crowd. The last „micro“-round Shotta Paul said that they killed everybody, even the host and that they should send out some real selectors. Like Ricky Trooper. Then he said „If Ricky Trooper was here he would say something like this“ and performed an impersonation of the great Selector. He went on with Panther of Black Kat Sound, Sir David Rodigan and Spider of Supersonic and Simon of Mighty Crown which caused a lot of laughter and was great entertaiment.
At the end Warriorsound and Jugglerz got voted out of the clash which was the perfect ending for a great competition.
Black Chiney and Dancehall Soldiers came back for one more match, but then Black Chiney just kept juggling for the last 45 minutes and provided some of their unique, high-class juggling.
All in all „Who runs the town“ was a great event with a lot of fun. The next time it should be only two „micro“-rounds in each battle because it took too long and it would be better if there was more dynamic and quicker changes thourought the night. Big respects to the crowd who on one side jumped up for party-bangers but also showed disapproval when the sounds didn’t really clash. The concept is interesting and not that easy to play, so it was great to see how the sounds managed to keep the vibes up during the rounds.
